Bad Yogi Beauty Secrets Part I

Bad Yogi Beauty Secrets Part I

“Secrets” is a strong word for what this is, but stay with me, ok? πŸ˜‰

Confession: I am THE WORST girly girl. I had to find YouTube tutorials explaining how to apply makeup like an adult before I filmed everything over the past year and I have NO idea how to properly blow-dry my hair. Pretty much any time I attempt to, it looks like I just stood in a wind tunnel.

Yet somehow I still get questions about what beauty stuff I use, so I figured why not bore you to death with a blog post about it! πŸ˜‰ Truth be told, I love these types of β€œnosy” posts from other bloggers, so maybe there are a few people out there like me…

I’m not really one to drop hundreds of dollars on super pricey β€œmust-haves” and my style is definitely functional over flashy and quality over quantity. One thing I do take super-seriously is sun protection. I think most people’s mothers have a signature scent (like Chanel No. 5 or something) and my mom was no different. Though hers wasn’t perfume as much as it was coconut! Weird, right?! It’s because she seriously wears sunscreen every day of her life from head to toe. Actually, I’m pretty sure sunscreen is her religion, and let me tell you, it’s paid off. She turned 50 this year and every time we go out, people make comments like, β€œOh, must be sisters’ day out!” and no matter where we are she gets carded for buying alcohol 100% of the time.

But I digress. My point is that I’ve seen how profoundly premature aging can be slowed by taking good care of your skin, so I’m no different.

Face Stuff:
1. I wash my face with Alaffia Black Soap + Clarisonic brush.
Yes, the brush is pricey, but I absolutely love it. I’ve seen amazing differences in my skin and don’t think I’d ever go back, though on the same note, I’m pretty confident just about any gentle cleansing brush would give comparable results.
The black soap is detoxifying and most important, totally natural without any additives. I have really sensitive skin and this never over-dries or irritates.

2. My β€œtoner” is organic rosewater. Seriously, that’s it. I put a few dabs on a cotton ball and brush all over.
3. Once the toner is dry, I moisturize with pure organic argan or jojoba oil. That’s it! I use Josie Maran for the argan oil and NOW Solutions for the jojoba.

Umm, have I mentioned that I’m pretty minimalist about makeup? Here goes!

1. Concealer
I get a little gray under my eyes so to avoid looking like I just walked out of the Zombie Apocalypse, I use Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer. Even if this is all I wear, it brightens my face up SO much and really makes me look refreshed and awake.

2. Daily Foundation
I despise the feel of creamy foundations and always feel like I’m wearing a mask, but because I’m neurotic, I don’t trust powders because OMG WHAT ARE YOU INHALING WHILE APPLYING THEM?! Right. So I stick to pretty simple stuff and swear by Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream and LOVE it. It’s seriously the only foundation I wear and I can’t say enough good things about it. Anytime I spend outdoors, I wear this on my face as my sunscreen and I’ve never been burnt or even picked up much color. The sunscreen in this is that good.

3. Bronzer/Blush
I wear bronzer every day and only use Nars Laguna. If I wear blush it’s Nars Orgasm. That’s that.

4. Eyes
Can’t live without eyeliner and mascara! I buy pretty cheap pencil eyeliner and usually roll with a navy blue or deep purple (whatever Sephora’s brand is). For filming I wear liquid and it’s Laura Mercier CrΓ¨me Eyeliner in Espresso.
Mascara is my favorite thing ever. If I wear nothing on my face, I always wear mascara. If I’m going for super BOOM-POW I wear Makeup Forever Aqua Smoky Lash in Extra Black (NOT waterproof because it will seriously never come off, and I hate this, haha). My daily mascara is Clinique High Impact in Black. It gives a nice fullness without being overly dramatic.

5. Lips
Burt’s Bees for the win! All day every day. I think I literally own one tube of lipstick and almost never use it.Β I love Burt’s Bees because there’s also no junk in there. No petroleum, no chemicals, just pure moisturizing goodness.

That’s all from me for now! What do you guys swear by?

  1. I’m so happy to see what you use! Your skin looks so good. I’m trying lush right now. πŸ™‚

    • you’re SO sweet, cassie! thank you so much! how do you like lush?!

  2. Great post! I use a lot of the similar products.

    • woo-hoo! great minds think alike, right? πŸ˜‰

  3. I love Burts Bees and NARS Laguna/Orgasm combo as well! For face wash I use “Yes to Carrots”, and Garnier BB cream- I’m all about low maintence! thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

    • i also use the yes to carrots face wipes for post-hot yoga sessions πŸ™‚

  4. OMG organic rosewater!!!!! My country is one of the biggest manufacturers of rosewater.

    • which country?! my favorite one isn’t found in the US (not pictured though that one is fine too) and i got it in france!

  5. I use the bobbi brown concealer – I would like to try the African black soap, is this only available in the US as I have never come across it before?

    • I see it a lot on Etsy and I get this on Vitacost or Amazon πŸ™‚

  6. As a gal who doesn’t wear makeup at all, except for extremely special occasions (like New Year’s Eve), I had to lol pretty hard at your description of your makeup as minimalist. That’s a lot of makeup to me! πŸ˜‰

    • Hahaha! I’m glad I’m not the only one. If I wear any thing, it’s foundation and powder. If I’m feeling crazy I’ll try mascara and/or eyeshadow, but eyeshadow is when I’m feeling REALLY adventurous; same with if I ever use lipstick/lipgloss. That said, unless I go out of the house, I don’t even bother with the foundation/powder, lol.

  7. Part 2 is going to be hair care right? It seems like my life demands my hair be in a ponytail holder 90% of the time. Nothing I have ever tried seems helps to strengthen and keep it from breaking.

    • yes though i suck at hair care, lol! i brush it with my fingers most times and use, maybe, 3 things on it and that’s on special occasions πŸ˜‰

  8. Those products look very intriguing! What type of skin do you have? Mine is pretty oily which makes me a little nervous to try the oils & liquid foundation.

    • I have dry and oily depending on the day, haha. I used to get TERRIBLE breakouts as a teenager, so I’ve been wary of liquid for as long as I can remember. But I’ve never had a single complaint with this… if anything, I find it balances my skin.

  9. I use jojoba oil for my hair so reading your post to use it as a moisturizer was enlightening. Tried it since reading this post for about a month. LOVE IT! This is so much better than all the moisturizer I’ve used in the past.
    Thanks for the hint.

    • awesome! and i love that i’m not worrying about whether there’s crazy chemicals in there or not…

  10. As I seem to have the same skin type as yours, I plan to start your routine ASAP. I although have a slightly more complex condition than yours, as I have rosacea, so on the evenings I put some Helichrysum water instead of rose’s, and it’s perfect that way. I can’t wait to receive the African black soap to start properly ! πŸ™‚ Thanks for your tips !

  11. You should def do a post on what moisturizer and cleanser you use for your hair and body! πŸ˜€

  12. If you love Burt’s Bees peppermint, you should try the tinted lip balms. They are so creamy and give just enough hint of color. I absolutely love them!
